Grandparents and other Relatives Raising Children
Today, more than one million American children live in homes headed by grandparents or other relatives. In about two out of five of these homes, the children's parents may come and go or may not be able to properly care for the children.
You play a key role in your family. You may be a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or a godparent. More than that, each day you give what a parent would -- love, food, family, and a home. You are doing your best to be a safe port in a stormy world.
Caring for children is important and rewarding, but very tough work. It's even more difficult when the children and family are coming out of a crisis. It's natural for you to feel sad, angry, worried, tired or overwhelmed. With time and the support of others, things can and will get better.
As a caregiver, you need to take care of yourself. Make time for you on a regular basis. Take walks, read books, take naps, enjoy hobbies, or attend our Monthly Support Group. Whether you're a grandparent or another relative, you'll be very welcome. The group is free, and it is a good place to get information, ideas, and emotional support. We meet the third Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. Transportation assistance is available, and we offer free childcare.
